Cameron Highlands Tour

Tea, Strawberries, and Cool Mountain Air

Cameron Highlands is Malaysia's premier highland retreat. At 1,800 metres elevation, the temperature drops to a comfortable 15-25°C — a genuine escape from KL's equatorial heat. Tea plantations carpet the hillsides, strawberry farms dot the roadside, and the mossy cloud forest feels like another planet.

The drive takes about 3 hours each way, with the final hour on a winding mountain road that has over 100 consecutive turns. This is exactly the kind of road where having a professional driver makes the difference between arriving relaxed and arriving white-knuckled.

A Full Day in the Highlands

1

BOH Tea Plantation

Malaysia's most famous tea brand operates the Sungei Palas estate in Cameron Highlands. A hilltop tea centre overlooks manicured tea gardens rolling down the valley. Free factory tour shows you how leaves become your morning teh tarik.

2

Strawberry Farms

Cameron is the only place in Malaysia where strawberries grow year-round. Pick your own at farms along the main road — kids love it. The berries are smaller and sweeter than imported varieties. RM25-RM40 per punnet.

3

Mossy Forest

A cloud forest at 2,000 metres where every surface is coated in moss, ferns, and pitcher plants. A boardwalk trail makes it accessible. Bring a jacket — it is noticeably cooler up here, even by Cameron standards.

4

Kea Farm Morning Market

Vegetables, strawberries, corn, honey, and highland flowers at prices significantly lower than KL supermarkets. If you have a private car, stock up — the boot can handle it.

5

Lavender Garden

Well-maintained gardens with lavender fields, flower terraces, and photo spots. Popular with families and couples. Best visited on weekday mornings to avoid crowds.

6

Steamboat Lunch

Cameron's signature dining experience. Hot pot with fresh highland vegetables, local mushrooms, and your choice of meats and seafood. The cool weather makes steamboat especially satisfying here.

Good to Know Before You Go

Leave by 7am

Early departure beats KL traffic and gets you to the highlands by 10am. The tea plantations and farms are less crowded in the morning, and the mountain views are clearest before afternoon clouds roll in.

Bring a Jacket

Temperatures range from 15-25°C. Coming from KL's 32°C, it feels cold. A light jacket or sweater is essential. Rain is common, especially in the afternoon — bring a rain jacket too.

Motion Sickness

The mountain road has 100+ consecutive turns. Take medication 30 minutes before the ascent if prone to car sickness. The Simpang Pulai route is gentler than the Tapah route.
