KL to Kuala Selangor
Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Selangor
Kuala Selangor is about 70 km northwest of KL, roughly 1.5 hours by car. It is famous for the Kampung Kuantan firefly colonies — one of the largest synchronous firefly displays in the world. The boat ride through mangroves watching thousands of fireflies blink in unison is genuinely magical.
Since the firefly tour starts at dusk, this is an afternoon-to-evening trip. Your driver drops you off, waits during the river tour, and drives you back to KL in the dark — which is when you appreciate not having to navigate rural roads yourself. Combine with a seafood lunch at the famous Kuala Selangor restaurants on the way in. Book a car with driver for a hassle-free evening.

Firefly Tour
Board a small boat at Kampung Kuantan and glide through mangroves as thousands of fireflies synchronise their blinking along the riverbanks. Tours run from 7:30pm to 10:30pm. A unique experience found in few places worldwide.
Bukit Melawati
A hilltop with a historical lighthouse, old fort ruins, and friendly silver-leaf monkeys. The panoramic view of the Straits of Malacca is worth the short walk up. Visit before the firefly tour while it is still light.
Seafood Restaurants
Kuala Selangor is known for its fresh, affordable seafood — particularly chilli crab, butter prawns, and fried sotong. Pasir Penambang restaurants along the coast are the local favourite. Eat on the way to the fireflies.
Good to Know Before You Go
Leave KL by 3-4pm
The firefly tour starts at dusk (~7:30pm). Leave KL by mid-afternoon to have time for a seafood dinner and Bukit Melawati before the boat ride. Your driver knows the timing.
No Flash Photography
Camera flashes disturb the fireflies and are not permitted on the boat tour. Use your eyes, not your phone. Some phones can capture the experience on night mode without flash.
Night Drive Back
The return drive to KL is on rural then highway roads in the dark. Having a professional driver who knows this route is one of the biggest advantages of not self-driving for this trip.
