When your group exceeds what a car can handle, a van becomes the practical choice. Instead of booking multiple cars with multiple drivers, one van keeps everyone together, costs less per person, and simplifies the logistics. Here is how to choose the right van for your group travel in Malaysia.
Van Options Available
10-Seater Van (Toyota Hiace)
The classic workhorse. The Toyota Hiace 10-seater is the most common van for group travel in Malaysia. It comfortably seats 10 passengers with a reasonable luggage area at the back.
Best for: Small groups (7-10 people), factory visits, team outings, airport group pickups. The 10-seater is the right size when an MPV is too small but a 15-seater feels excessive.
Luggage capacity: With 10 passengers, luggage space is limited. If everyone has a full-size suitcase, it will be tight. Works well when passengers are travelling light or on day trips without much baggage.
15-Seater Van (Toyota Hiace / CAM Kingo)
The step up for larger groups. The 15-seater provides more space per passenger and a larger luggage area. The Toyota Hiace long-body version is the standard, with the CAM Kingo as an alternative.
Best for: Medium groups (11-15 people), school trips, family reunions, conference shuttles. Also good for groups of 8-10 who want extra luggage space or more room to spread out.
Luggage capacity: Better than the 10-seater. Can handle suitcases for 10-12 people if the rear seats are used for luggage instead of passengers.
Staria/Starex (10 seats)
A premium alternative to the standard Hiace. The Hyundai Staria (or older Starex) and Maxus G10 offer a more refined ride with better suspension, air conditioning, and interior finish. They seat about 10 passengers but with more comfort per seat.
Best for: VIP group travel, corporate shuttles where comfort matters, premium wedding entourage. When you need a van but want it to feel more like a luxury vehicle. See Staria/Starex options.
18-Seater Van (CAM Placer X / Higer Ace)
The largest van before stepping up to a bus. The 18-seater handles big groups — school classes, large team outings, conference delegations — in one vehicle with one driver.
Best for: Large groups (16-18 people), school trips, company team building, conference shuttles. When one 15-seater is not enough but a bus is overkill.
When to Choose a Van Over Multiple Cars
The decision point is usually around 7-8 people. Here is the comparison:
- 8 people in two MPVs: Two vehicles, two drivers, two prices, coordination between two cars in traffic, potential for one car arriving late.
- 8 people in one 10-seater van: One vehicle, one driver, one price, everyone arrives together, one booking to manage.
The van is almost always cheaper per person, simpler to coordinate, and better for group bonding. The trade-off is that individual comfort per seat is slightly less than an MPV — but for most trips, the convenience outweighs this.
Common Group Travel Scenarios
Airport Group Pickup
A team of 10 colleagues lands at KLIA for a company event. One van collects everyone at the same time, loads all the luggage, and delivers the group to the hotel or venue together. Compare that with booking 3 separate cars and hoping they all show up at the right terminal at the right time. Airport transfer options.
Company Team Building
Your company is doing a team building day at A Famosa in Melaka or a paintball session in Shah Alam. A van picks everyone up from the office, drives to the venue, waits during the activity, and drives everyone back. No one needs to drive after an exhausting day of activities.
Family Reunion or Wedding Entourage
Extended family gathering with uncles, aunties, and cousins travelling from the hotel to the wedding venue. One or two vans handle the entire group, ensuring nobody gets lost and everyone arrives together for photos.
Outstation Group Trip
A group of friends going to Cameron Highlands or Penang for the weekend. A van turns the drive into part of the experience — conversation, snacks, shared playlists — instead of splitting the group across multiple cars.
Conference or Exhibition Shuttle
Running a conference with speakers and VIPs staying at different hotels? A van (or multiple vans on rotation) provides scheduled shuttle service between hotels and the venue. Everyone knows the schedule, the van is at the lobby on time, and no one is left waiting for a ride.

Tips for Group Van Travel
- Count accurately: A van rated for 15 seats means 15 people. If you have 16, you need the next size up. Overloading is illegal and unsafe.
- Consider luggage separately: 15 passengers with 15 suitcases will not fit in a 15-seater van. Either reduce passenger count or arrange a second vehicle for luggage.
- Assign a group coordinator: One person communicates with the driver — pickup time, stops, schedule changes. Having 15 people WhatsApp the driver separately creates confusion.
- Plan toilet stops: On long trips, agree on stop intervals. The driver knows where the rest areas are and can suggest the best ones.
- Confirm the itinerary in advance: Share the full schedule with the driver the day before so they can plan the best routes and timing.
