KL to Cameron Highlands: Route Guide & Tips

Cameron Highlands is the kind of destination that makes you forget you are in tropical Malaysia. Tea plantations stretching across rolling hills, strawberry farms, temperatures that actually require a jacket — it is the highland escape that every KL resident and tourist eventually takes. The catch: getting there involves a 3-hour drive through some of Peninsular Malaysia's most scenic (and winding) mountain roads.

The Basics: Distance and Travel Time

Cameron Highlands is approximately 200 kilometres from Kuala Lumpur. The drive takes 3 to 3.5 hours under normal conditions. The first two hours are highway driving — smooth, flat, and fast. The final hour is a steep mountain ascent with continuous hairpin turns that either thrill you or test your stomach.

There is no train or direct flight to Cameron Highlands. You either drive, take a bus, or hire a car with driver. For most visitors, especially those coming from KL, a private car is the most comfortable and flexible option.

Route Options

Route 1: Via Simpang Pulai (Recommended)

Take the North-South Expressway (PLUS) from KL to the Simpang Pulai exit near Ipoh, then climb up via Route 185. This is the newer, better-maintained mountain road. The gradient is gentler, the turns are wider, and it delivers you to the southern end of Cameron Highlands near Brinchang.

Total distance: ~210 km. Travel time: ~3 hours.

Route 2: Via Tapah

The older, more traditional route. Exit the PLUS highway at Tapah and climb via Route 59. This road is narrower, steeper, and more winding. It enters Cameron Highlands from the south at Ringlet. Some travellers prefer it for the scenery — the road cuts through dense rainforest and passes waterfalls.

Total distance: ~190 km. Travel time: ~3.5 hours (the mountain section is slower).

Which Route Should You Take?

If comfort is your priority, take Simpang Pulai. If you enjoy dramatic mountain driving and do not get carsick, Tapah offers more character. Most private car drivers default to Simpang Pulai because it is faster and safer, especially in wet weather. See our Cameron Highlands transfer details.

What You Will See in Cameron Highlands

BOH Tea Plantation

Malaysia's most famous tea brand operates two estates in Cameron Highlands that are open to visitors. The Sungei Palas estate is the more popular one — a hilltop tea centre surrounded by manicured tea gardens rolling down the valley. Free factory tours show you how leaves become your morning teh tarik.

Strawberry Farms

Cameron Highlands is the only place in Malaysia where strawberries grow year-round. Multiple farms along the main road let you pick your own — kids love it. The strawberries are smaller and sweeter than imported ones. Expect to pay RM25–RM40 per punnet depending on the season.

Mossy Forest

A cloud forest at 2,000 metres where every surface is coated in moss, ferns, and pitcher plants. A boardwalk trail makes it accessible without a guide, though guided walks offer more context on the unique ecosystem. Bring a jacket — it is noticeably cooler up here even by Cameron standards.

Morning Markets

The Kea Farm morning market and Brinchang night market sell local vegetables, strawberries, corn, honey, and highland flowers at prices significantly lower than KL supermarkets. If you have a private car, stock up — the boot can handle it.

Lavender Garden

A well-maintained garden with lavender fields, flower terraces, and photo spots. It is a popular stop for families and couples. The entrance fee is modest and the grounds are well-kept. Best visited on weekday mornings to avoid crowds.

Best Vehicle for the Cameron Highlands Drive

The mountain road matters when choosing your vehicle. Here is what works:

  • Standard MPV (Innova, Alza): Good engine power for the climb, enough space for luggage and market purchases on the way back. Seats 5-7. The practical choice for most trips. View our MPV options.
  • Premium Sedan (Camry, Accord): Comfortable ride on the highway, capable on the mountain road. Best for couples or small groups prioritising comfort over boot space.
  • Van (Toyota Hiace): If you are going as a group of 8+, a van handles the mountain road well and gives everyone space. See van rental options.
  • Executive MPV (Vellfire/Alphard): The premium option. Captain seats, smooth suspension, and enough power to handle the gradients without straining. If you want to arrive feeling like you have been at a spa rather than on a mountain road, this is it.

Travel Tips for Cameron Highlands

Timing

Depart KL by 7am to arrive before the lunch crowd. The tea plantations and farms are less crowded in the morning, and you get the best light for photos at the tea gardens.

Avoid Friday-Sunday during school holidays. The mountain road gets congested, parking in Brinchang fills up, and the farms are shoulder-to-shoulder. Weekday visits are dramatically more pleasant.

Weather

Cameron Highlands temperatures range from 15°C to 25°C. Rain is common, especially in the afternoon. Pack a light rain jacket and layers. The morning is usually clear — plan outdoor activities before lunch.

Motion Sickness

The mountain road has over 100 consecutive turns. If anyone in your group is prone to car sickness, take medication 30 minutes before starting the ascent. Sit in the front seat if possible. Your driver can also make brief stops if needed.

Return Trip

Leave Cameron Highlands by 3pm to reach KL before dark. The mountain road is more challenging at night — reduced visibility, potential fog, and fatigue. If you are doing a day trip, plan your itinerary so you are heading downhill by mid-afternoon.

Day Trip vs Overnight

A day trip is feasible but rushed. You leave KL at 7am, arrive at 10am, have 4-5 hours to explore, and head back by 3pm. It works for a sampler visit. For a proper Cameron experience — visiting multiple farms, trying the steamboat restaurants, catching the morning market — stay at least one night.
